SUMMARY:Spring Park Clean-ups
DESCRIPTION:Come on out for some fun park play and community service as part of our ongoing effort to help keep our community’s parks safe\, clean\, and green! The Glebe Community Association’s annual park clean-ups\, part of the City of Ottawa’s Spring Cleaning the Capital programme\, are underway\, most taking place this year on Saturday\, May 13 starting at 10:00 a.m. (pouring rain date: Sunday\, May 14). Link here for more details.\n\n\nHappy spring everyone! \nThese events have always been great opportunities for neighbours to gather for some fun park play and community service as part of our ongoing effort to help keep our community’s parks safe\, clean\, and green. \nOn the cleaning front\, the main goal is to pick up litter; for parks with play areas\, this includes giving the sand a rake over to remove any other dangerous items (to be removed by adults). \nIf you can\, bring along a rake\, work gloves\, and a container to help consolidate (and safely store) any garbage we find into one garbage bag at each park (to minimize our use of larger single-use plastic bags). \nThe Glebe is fortunate to be home to twelve beautiful City parks along with other green spaces. They are a source of daily joy\, peace\, health\, and wonder for residents young and old.  Come together with your friends\, family\, and neighbours to the park clean-up near you\, make some new acquaintances  – and create some more wonderful neighbourhood moments and memories! \nBelow is a listing of GCA Parks Committee contacts who plan to be on hand at the parks that morning. Always feel free to contact us at parks@glebeca.ca to get involved with and organize for this and other Glebe parks initiatives in the years to come. \nGlebe Parks & Volunteer Leads: \n  \n\n\n\nPark Name & Location\nLead Name\n\n\nBrown’s Inlet: Broadway Avenue\nn/a\n\n\nCapital Park: Ella Street\nEmelie Braschi\n\n\nCentral Park East & the Exploration Garden: Bank Street\, East side at Powell (2023 date: April 22)\nElizabeth Ballard\, Meghan Storey\n\n\nCentral Park West: Bank Street\, west side at Powell\nConnie Boynton\n\n\nChamberlain Park / Chamberlain Park Tennis Courts (on Glendale between Lyon & Percy\nJason & Janine Anderson\n\n\nDalhousie Park: Bell Street S.\nSue Stefko\, Scott Templeton\n\n\nGlebe Memorial / Glendale Park: Glendale Avenue\nAngus McCabe\n\n\nLionel Britton: Fifth Avenue at O’Connor\nMeghan Schreiner\n\n\nPatterson Creek Lagoon: Clemow Avenue East of Bank\nWilliam Price\n\n\nPatterson Creek Park (NCC)\, Linden Terrace\nJane Bower\n\n\nSen. SUMMARY:Old Home Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Old Home Earth Day is an event to empower residents and owners of residential and multi-unit residential buildings to take concrete steps towards decreasing the carbon footprint/energy intensity of their home and save money. \nThe Old Home Earth Day Event (OHEDE) – our second in what we hope will be annual – will take place at the Glebe Community Centre on Saturday\, April 21 from 10am to 4pm. It’s entirely free\, thanks to our volunteers and sponsors\, and it’s open to all Ottawa area residents. The objective is to encourage residents to take action to reduce the carbon intensity of their home. A second objective is to motivate residents to take action to live more lightly in other ways. The overall goal is to reduce our community’s and city’s contribution to global warming – think global\, act local. What better way to celebrate Earth Day? \nOHEDE is organized by the Glebe Community Association (GCA)\, in particular its Environment Committee\, and SMARTNet Alliance\, a business group whose mission is to accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy. Also on the organizing team are the Peace and Environment Resource Centre\, Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-op (OREC) and Bullfrog Power. The team is drawing in all kinds of expertise with an emphasis on the practical: what’s the most effective way to enhance your home’s energy efficiency and save money at the same time\, and even qualify for grants? The event will feature presentations\, exhibits\, conversation areas and more. We’re engaging local businesses\, many of which were generous supporters of our first event in April 2017\, which attracted 300 participants.
