SUMMARY:Heritage at GGGS 2018!
DESCRIPTION:Heritage at GGGS 2018!\n\nHERITAGE AT THE GREAT GLEBE GARAGE SALE \nWHAT?  FIFTH! Annual One-Day Heritage Plaque Event in the Glebe \nWHY? To celebrate the wonderful architecture and social history of the Glebe. \nWHEN? During the Great Glebe Garage Sale on Saturday May 26\, 2018 \nWHO? The owners/residents of Glebe homes with support from the GCA Heritage Committee. \nHOW?  Prepare and install a simple temporary plaque/sign and attach it a stick or tree on your lawn near the sidewalk that identifies the history or your home and its architectural style.  This could include details on the builder/architect and details on its historical occupants. \nHomeowners are encouraged to prepare and install a simple temporary plaque/sign presenting a brief history of the home and its occupants over the years.  You can find a basic one-page template with example at the Committee’s web site\, http://www.glebeca.ca/committees/heritage/heritage.html\, or by e-mailing the Committee at heritage@glebeca.ca for assistance\, or create your own!  The plaque can be typed and printed\, hand written\, include copies of old photographs\, the architect/builder if known\, whatever you like!  We suggest you put the information on a full or half-page adhesive label or page that can be adhered to a foam board / cardboard and stapled to a long wooden stake\, or a tree. \nFor information on how to research the history of your home\, check out the City of Ottawa Archives guide on Researching the History of your Home. You may also wish to use a seven day free trial to Newspapers.com or simple Google searches to research the background of known previous occupants.  You can find the names of previous occupants by looking at the Ottawa City Directories (hardcopy or microfilm) at the main library or City Archives.  Only a few years of the directories are available on the internet (1890’s\, 1909\, 1911\, 1913\, 1914\, 1915\, 1916 and 1923) via https://sites.google.com/site/onlinedirectorysite/Home/can/on/ottawa and 1912 via https://archive.org/details/ottawadirec191200midiuoft.  For assistance or questions\, contact the Heritage Committee at heritage@glebeca.ca.  The committee is happy to help identify the architectural style of your house or help prepare your plaque for you using any information you might have.   \nNote:  If you live on Glebe Avenue\, Linden Terrace\, Monkland Avenue\, Clemow Avenue or Powell Avenue\, the GCA Heritage Committee has already completed a detailed electronic file on each home on these streets and would be pleased to provide you with an electronic copy for your use.  \n\nHeritage Register:  Many owners will have received a letter from the city advising you that your house will be added to the City’s Heritage Register this year.  The committee encourages you to use the research provided to you by the city to prepare a plaque! (or ask us to make one for you).  More information on the city project can be found here: https://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/planning-and-development/heritage-conservation/identifying-and-protecting-heritage-properties#heritage-inventory-project \nDo you live in the proposed Clemow Estates Phase II HCD? \n(Details here https://glebeca.ca/clemow-estate-phase-ii/. and http://ottawa.ca/en/city-hall/public-consultations/planning-and-infrastructure/phase-ii-clemow-estate-heritage. \nIn support of the City’s work towards the possible designation of Phase II of the Clemow Estate Heritage Conservation District\, the GCA Heritage Committee has compiled research on the homes in the proposed district and provided each house with its own prepared plaque last year for GGS 2017.  We hope you put out your signs from last year again this year on May 26! \nIf the sign we provided last year has been lost or damaged\, let us know and we will prepare a new one for you for this year!  E-mail us heritage@glebeca.ca  \nBackground: \nDuring the GGGS in 2014 the Heritage Committee supported a Heritage Ottawa project that saw temporary plaques put up at homes on Glebe East of Bank and Linden Terrace.  In 2015\, 2016 and 2017 the committee expanded the project by encouraging all residents in the Glebe to post plaques for their own homes with our support and also provided remade plaques to those in the proposed new heritage district.   The pilot project and subsequent iterations were well received and enjoyed by hundreds of passers-by. \nThe GCA Heritage Committee is making this an annual feature of the GGGS to help increase awareness and appreciation among residents and visitors of the special and valuable heritage character of our Glebe neighbourhood. \nSaveSave

DESCRIPTION:The Great Glebe Garage Sale is an annual community garage sale and celebration of Spring. Homeowners in the Glebe set up sales on their front lawns\, driveways and porches and Bank Street shops hold a massive sidewalk sale. Collectively it makes for one gigantic event attracting thousands of people to the neighbourhood.  This year the sale takes place on Saturday May 26th\, 2018 and runs from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m\, rain or shine. \nFrom the start of the Great Glebe Garage Sale in 1986\, the Glebe Community Association has encouraged vendors (and shoppers) to voluntarily donate some of their proceeds to the Ottawa Food Bank.  The best way to donate is through the Ottawa Food Bank’s dedicated web page at www.ottawafoodbank.ca/gggs.  Last year’s sale raised over $14\,000 for the Ottawa Food Bank – this year we hope to raise even more. \nGot questions about this year’s event? Head to our FAQs page. \n

SUMMARY:Old Home Earth Day
DESCRIPTION:Old Home Earth Day is an event to empower residents and owners of residential and multi-unit residential buildings to take concrete steps towards decreasing the carbon footprint/energy intensity of their home and save money. \nThe Old Home Earth Day Event (OHEDE) – our second in what we hope will be annual – will take place at the Glebe Community Centre on Saturday\, April 21 from 10am to 4pm. It’s entirely free\, thanks to our volunteers and sponsors\, and it’s open to all Ottawa area residents. The objective is to encourage residents to take action to reduce the carbon intensity of their home. A second objective is to motivate residents to take action to live more lightly in other ways. The overall goal is to reduce our community’s and city’s contribution to global warming – think global\, act local. What better way to celebrate Earth Day? \nOHEDE is organized by the Glebe Community Association (GCA)\, in particular its Environment Committee\, and SMARTNet Alliance\, a business group whose mission is to accelerate the transition to a sustainable economy. Also on the organizing team are the Peace and Environment Resource Centre\, Ottawa Renewable Energy Co-op (OREC) and Bullfrog Power. The team is drawing in all kinds of expertise with an emphasis on the practical: what’s the most effective way to enhance your home’s energy efficiency and save money at the same time\, and even qualify for grants? The event will feature presentations\, exhibits\, conversation areas and more. We’re engaging local businesses\, many of which were generous supporters of our first event in April 2017\, which attracted 300 participants.

SUMMARY:Meeting: Affordable Housing at 289 Carling Ave.
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to an information session regarding the future affordable housing development at 289 Carling Ave.\, where you can learn more about the City’s request for proposal (RFP) process. \nThe land at 289 Carling was recently transferred from the federal government to the City on the condition that it be developed as affordable housing. It is now the City’s role to outline its objectives for use for the property\, and gather bids for development through the RFP process. \nAffordable housing developments undergo the same approvals process as private developers\, which means there will be further opportunities for the public to comment as the development progresses. My hope is that this RFP information session will keep neighbouring residents informed on the City process and provide an opportunity to voice concerns directly to the staff involved as early as possible. \n  \nMichael Reid \nOffice of Councillor David Chernushenko | Bureau du conseiller David Chernushenko \nCity of Ottawa | Ville d’Ottawa

SUMMARY:New hospital campus information session: January 31
DESCRIPTION:On January 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lansdowne Park Horticulture Building\, The Ottawa Hospital will host a public information session to present an update on hospital services planned for the new campus and the background journey to an architectural design concept. \nThe location of the Hospital will have benefits and impacts on the Glebe and this information session is a great opportunity to learn more. \nhttp://greatertogether.ca \nThe Ottawa Hospital has begun the planning process for the development of a new regional trauma and acute care centre at the former site of the Sir John Carling building to replace the existing Civic Campus\, which has been in operation since 1924. Public engagement so far has included a third-party report on engagement\, a series of community feedback sessions\, and the launch of a website devoted to sharing information and soliciting ideas. Community members\, patients and hospital staff have been sharing ideas and priorities for the new campus. \nOn January 31 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Lansdowne Park Horticulture Building\, The Ottawa Hospital will host a public information session to present an update on hospital services planned for the new campus and the background journey to an architectural design concept. \nThe draft architectural concept will demonstrate the landscape influences behind how the buildings could be placed on the Sir John Carling site. The session will also update on a Community Engagement Group which will work closely with the hospital’s Board of Governors on range of issues such as access\, parking\, greenspace and design. \nThank you to everyone who participated and shared ideas and feedback in the initial series of information sessions. There will be a number of opportunities to get involved and share ideas in the coming months and over the life of the project\, in person and online. \nTo provide input before January 31\, please visit www.greatertogether.ca/engage to share your ideas. Your feedback will be essential throughout the process so that together\, we can plan and develop a campus that serves our community for generations to come.
